When Lata was born, she was named Hema, which her parents later changed to Lata, as a female character was named Latika in the play “Bhavabandhan” by her father.
Her father Dinanath changed his surname from Hardikar to Mangeshkar, as he wanted to associate his original residence, which was a small town Mangeshi in Goa, with his family name.
At the age of 5, Lata started working as an actress in Marathi plays directed by her father.

When she was 13, her father died of heart disease in 1942, and after her father’s death, the Mangeshkar family’s closest friend- Master Vinayak (Vinayak Damodar Karnataki) took care of her family. And helped her become an actress and singer.
In the year 1942, she sang her first song “Nachu Ya Gade, Khelu Sari Mani House Bhaari” for the Marathi film “Kiti Hasal”, however, the song was later dropped from the final cut.
She also holds the record for the oldest winner of the National Film Award (age 61) in the Best Female Playback Singer category for the film “Lekin…” (1990).
